However, if you just want a good used car and you’re open to exploring different makes and models, then you’re likely to have too many choices and you’ll need to narrow them down by deciding what you really need and want.
Needs Vs Wants
Starting with what you need in a used car, these features are usually non-negotiable and are considered ‘must-haves’.
Things such as certain safety features, transmission, vehicle size, and number of doors are dependent on the reasons you want the car. A small, two-door sports car might look great but if you have three small children it’s hardly practical.
Next, make a list of your wants. These features are nice to have but if you find the perfect car and it doesn’t have something you want, then it’s not a deal breaker and you can still buy the car.
Dealer Vs Private Seller
Here’s where you really need to be careful and do your research.
Buying from a private seller might seem like a better deal but you know nothing about them or the car you’re going to purchase.
Once you buy the car it’s yours, for better or worse, so be careful before you sign anything.
Buying a car from a dealer might seem a little more expensive but if something goes wrong with it you have more rights as a consumer. Dealers are obligated to tell you if there’s anything wrong with the car and to disclose as much as they know of the car’s history.
Test Driving
Ok, you’ve found the right car; now let’s take it for a test drive.
Always drive the car before you decide, you’d be surprised how many people skip this part.
When you take the car out pay attention to the condition of the interior, any knocks or rattles, and check the exhaust when you start it and when it’s been idling for a while. Look in your rear-view mirror as you accelerate and check for smoke coming from the exhaust.
Check the brakes, suspension and handling, transmission, lights, indicators, wipers and how smoothly the car rides. Make sure everything inside works such as airconditioning, dash lights and other features.
Check your Documentation
Finally, check that the paperwork and documentation are in order.
Read any fine print and clauses in contracts and insurance papers. If in doubt, ask a lawyer to take a look before you sign anything.
