Kia Sets New Records With 2019 Sales in Australia

While the new-car market saw one of its slowest years to date, Kia managed to buck the trend in 2019, positioning itself as one of Australia’s favourite and most reliable car brands. In the last 10 years however, Kia has worked extremely hard to earn this level of credibility. Not even making the Top 10 in Australia until 2004, where Kia scraped 10th place, the brand has come a long way since its inception in the 1900s. After this achievement in 2004 - it would take Kia just over 10 years to hit the Top 10 list again.

A long way to the top for Kia

After seeing a 6 per cent decline in sales in 2014, Kia embarked on a ground-breaking journey to develop a knockout branding campaign. This campaign wildly successful would not only close the incredibly wide sales gap between sister brand, Hyundai, but it would also carve up some of Australia’s most popular vehicles.

After the campaign launch in 2014, Kia started making strides to improve rankings and sales. Seeing the brand value catapult, with almost a 480 per cent increase in sales, Kia finally positioned itself in the Top 10 in 2016 and hasn’t looked back since. Sales continued to skyrocket for the brand, with Kia seeing a 26.5 per cent increase in sales in 2017 and a shocking 28.3 per cent increase in 2018.

Finishing in ninth place in the 2017 sales race, Kia jumped to seventh in 2018 and sixth in 2019, ahead of globally renowned brands including, Nissan, Volkswagen and Honda. The Kia Cerato, one of Kia’s best-selling vehicle, also posted its highest sales result on record last year.

Top 10 car brands of 2019

All top five ranked brands were down in sales by at least 2 per cent last year. Leading global brand and number five spot, Ford saw its lowest result since 1968. And while Mazda snagged the number two spot, they still saw a 12.3 per cent decrease in sales.

Kia remained strong with a record number of sales in Australia, sitting at 61,503 cars sold, which is up by 4.6 per cent from the previous year. Chief Operating Officer of Kia Motors Australia commented on their success this year saying, “There is no question that 2019 was a challenging year. Our result was built on exceptional products, focused planning and consistency of pricing and delivery in all areas.”
